Re: Chickagami Park in Parkman, Ohio (Formerly Camp Chickagami) Date: October 9th, 2009 To: all scouts and leaders in the GWRC From: Pete Biltz, Assistant Scout Executive
The Geauga Park District (GPD) has completed Phase One of construction at Chickagami Park and has reopened it for Scouting use beginning October 5, 2009. Scout units can make reservations prior to the public during the next 2 weeks. It will be a full month in subsequent years based on the sales agreement.
The general public will begin use on November 1, 2009.
The Park is open from sunrise to sunset, there is no longer a gate. There are no GWRC or GPD personnel on site to aid with check in or check out, emergencies, equipment needs and program. Park Rangers do regular patrols. Please observe the rules listed at the Park entrance.
There are two group camping sites, designated as Camp Site A and B. Both sites include the following:
Any unit wishing to visit the property for a day activity, use the pavilion or camp in the designated campsites will need a permit issued thru the GPD by calling 440-286-9516. There is no cost for any Scout Unit, but you must obtain a permit.
The GWRC still maintains operation of these 3 buildings: Seton and West Cabin (each side sleeps 24) rental is $25 per side per night, the Training Center (to be used for training and meeting purposes only) no cost , and the OA Building (not available for rent). These buildings can be reserved thru the GWRC by calling 330-898-8474 ext. 12. A GPD Permit would also need to be acquired.
The Park District has developed an Adopt an Area program that would allow Scout Units to maintain old scout structures like the Chapel and fire ring. Eagle Scout projects could also be developed on the property. Call Pete Biltz at 1-800-234-7268 ext 31 if you are interested in one of these programs or have general questions regarding the GPD and GWRC property agreement and usage.
To: All GWRC Staff and Volunteer Leaders From: Pete Biltz, ASE and Geauga Park District (GPD) Re: Chickagami Park Date: March 26, 2010
The GPD will begin Phase 2 of construction at Chickagami Park this spring. Plans call for more camping sites, a new shelter, and other amenities. Due to the construction there will be no weekday camping permitted from April 1, 2010 to October 1, 2010. Weekend use of the camp and the facilities will continue as usual. Plan to arrive anytime after 7pm on Fridays to avoid and construction progress.
If you haven't had a chance to visit the property since it has reopened we encourage you to do so. The GPD has improved many areas including the parking lot, 2 new campsites complete with grills and prep tables, a new restroom facility, and a hiking trail.
As a reminder, if you would like to utilize one of the 2 new campsites or the shelter for an outing, you can call the GPD directly, check for availability and secure a permit thru their office.
If you would like to use the Seton or West cabin, you will need to check with the BSA office (330-898-8474 ext. 12 Penny) first to check availability and then secure a permit thru the Park District. The GWRC still maintains and schedules the Seton-West Cabin, training center and OA building.
We are excited about Phase two and the ongoing commitment to provide a beautiful setting for camping and enjoying the outdoors! If you or your unit are interested in a service project or an Eagle project, the campfire ring, chapel and other areas need some attention. Contact Pete Biltz at 330-898-8474 ext 31 for information.
